After years of exploring different EVs, from the i3 to the Kona and now the LEAF, we finally purchased a 2025 LEAF SV Plus! It’s our around-town car, and the heated seats, mirrors, steering wheel, plus the 360-degree cameras make it perfect for daily use. With a $7,500 rebate and another $3,000 from state incentives, we got it for under $30k. Our payment is about the same as what we used to spend on gas and maintenance for our ICE vehicle. We plan to use free Level 2 chargers around town for charging.

Half a decade of research?
The i3 test drive was in 2017, so it’s been 7.5 years.

What part of NY are you in? Does your utility offer any incentives for EV charging?

Upstate NY. My utility would give me $14.61/month if I installed a Level 2 charger and used at least 50 kWh, but it would take 6 years to break even on the installation cost.

Makes sense! In Georgia, the deals are great—free chargers and 1.8 cents per kWh overnight!

People who still talk about EV charging time and battery degradation are usually referencing older models like the LEAF. Liquid-cooled batteries are the standard in newer EVs.

You could’ve gotten a new Model 3 Long Range RWD for $34k at 1.99% APR. It has 363 miles of range.
