Buy Now Because of Trump's Tariffs?

I’ve been holding off to buy a 2025 Kia EV6 instead of a 2024 model, and was planning to buy sometime in 2025. However, with potential tariffs Trump may impose, would it be better to purchase before he takes office?

I can either pay cash or finance (my credit score is 828).

Kia is building a huge plant in Georgia to make the EV9, and they may expand to other EVs like the EV6 to keep receiving tax credits. Other manufacturers, like Polestar, are doing the same. I wouldn’t worry too much about tariffs.

You have some time. Tariffs wouldn’t likely take effect until summer 2025 at the earliest.

But be prepared: 74 million people voted for this without understanding how tariffs work.

He did tariffs in his first term and left office with a 38% approval rating. Many voted based on fear-mongering and misinformation.

He’s likely to push forward Project 2025, which could bring major cuts to social programs, corporate tax benefits, and deregulation.

@Peggy
The real issue is the number of people who didn’t vote at all. If you abstained from voting over certain issues, you likely only care about signaling your stance rather than real change.

People voting for tariffs because they don’t like China…they don’t realize how this impacts what they pay.

@olivia
They’re going after one of the world’s largest manufacturers—prices will only go up.

Thanks for the advice. I share the same concerns for our future.

The EV tax credit might also be on the chopping block soon.

Any change would need to go through Congress, so it probably wouldn’t impact this tax year.

True, but OP is planning to buy, not lease, so the tax credit timing may not affect them.

I leased my EV6 and took advantage of the rebates, planning to buy it if I still want to keep it. The option to give it back if EV tech evolves fast is also appealing.

And remember, China doesn’t pay for tariffs. We do.

It’s wild how political this has become. For me, EVs are about cost per horsepower. Not needing to buy gas is a nice bonus, but it’s secondary.

My first EV was a BMW i3, and the driving experience had me hooked. Saving money and the planet are great, but I bought it because EVs are fun to drive.

Exactly—opting out of gas shouldn’t be a political statement.

I wouldn’t make any big decisions based on possible policy changes.

This particular change doesn’t need Congress. He could act on this alone, and I think he will.

Isn’t production shifting to the US for North America?

Yes, in part due to recent incentives, which could shield some models from tariffs. Georgia is even opening a big battery plant for local sourcing.
