EV6 or EV9 for my next car?

In a couple of years, I’ll be looking to get a new car, and I’ve had my eye on the EV6 for a while now. I like the EV6, but I’m concerned about the slightly smaller boot compared to my current Avensis. I recently sat in both the EV6 and EV9 in a showroom, and while the EV9 is incredible, it feels like a lot of car for me.

I’ve previously driven an X-Trail, which was a nice size, but the EV9 felt even larger. The monthly payments are another factor—£700 for the EV9 versus £500 for the EV6 is quite a jump. I do long drives at least once a month (about three hours each way), and I want something comfortable. I’ve also owned a Tesla, but found it a bit cramped for long drives, even though it was fun to drive.

Any advice on how the EV6 compares to the EV9 for longer trips and general comfort? Is the EV9 worth the extra cost, or would the EV6 be plenty?

The way I see it, aside from price: EV6 seats 4-5 people comfortably, while the EV9 has room for 6-7. It really depends on how many people you regularly drive with.

I absolutely love my EV6, but as our family grows, the EV9 is tempting. We found the EV9 to be huge though—some will see that as a plus, others not so much. If we could do without strollers and bulky gear, the EV6 would be fine, but for longer trips, I can see the EV9 being perfect.

Same here. We have the EV6 but can’t fit all three kids comfortably. We ended up with a Model Y 3-row for that. If the EV9 had been out when we bought, we’d probably have gone that route.

Out of curiosity, how big is your family?

We have two kids (one 4 years old and one 1-year-old), both in car seats. We sometimes take our nephews along, but with only one extra seat, it’s tight. We also have my sister-in-law’s two dogs tagging along often, so it gets pretty cramped in the EV6!

Why not get both? :wink:

Unless you regularly need to transport a lot of people or haul large amounts of stuff, go for the EV6. The EV9 is better suited for big families or those who need major cargo space.

If you’re looking at 2 years out, maybe consider a 24-month lease. There are some great deals out there, and it could help you decide. You’ve already checked out both vehicles, so it’s really about which features matter most to you.

Honestly, the EV9 only makes sense if you need the extra seats. With the facelifted EV6 coming out, there’s almost nothing it doesn’t offer in terms of features.

The EV6 has more room inside than it seems from the outside. Unless you’re transporting five full-sized adults all the time, it should have plenty of space.

You must not carry much or go on long trips! I love my EV6, but for road trips with a lot of gear, I use my F150 Lightning.

Why is it an issue to bring a fourth person?

My family is tall, with most of us over 6’. Plus, we travel with two dogs. So space is a bit tight!

Got it, sounds like you have unique needs! I find the EV6 comfy for longer trips myself, but I see why you’d prefer a truck if you’re carrying a lot or have tall passengers.

@izael
I just prefer having room for all our gear on trips. With four people, the EV6 doesn’t have enough space for everything—no sports gear, golf clubs, coolers, etc. My Lightning has a big frunk for that, plus the truck bed for luggage.

@Peggy
Haha, fair enough!

The EV6 is on the smaller side in this segment. If you want more space, consider options like the Mach-E, Ioniq 5, or even the Skoda Enyaq.

The EV6 is getting a facelift for the 2025 model, so you might find good deals on 2024 models. It’s a big car with solid build quality and a good range. The EV9 is larger, and if you really need that extra space, it could be worth it. Don’t forget insurance costs might be higher too!

@olivia
What kind of facelift is coming for the EV6? I’m leaning towards it, but the rear design is a bit of a downside for me.
