Inconsistent at-home charging?

Isn’t at-home charging supposed to be more consistent? Last night, my charging app showed two different estimates: one saying my car would be charged in 5 hours, then another saying 16 hours. I’d love for it to be 5, but it’s usually closer to the 16-hour mark. Is this normal, or is my car not getting the full charge it should?

What car are you using? And which charger?

It’s a GWM ORA 03. Here’s the charger I use - LVWIT Type 2 EV Charging Cable,Electric Car Charger,EV Charger |5M|16A|11KW|3 Phase| Type 2 to Type 2,Portable IP54 Waterproof EVE Charger with Bag(TÜV/CE-certified EV cable) : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive

This could be due to an issue with the electricity supply at your home, or maybe your car reduces charging speed if it senses lower current. Definitely something you’d want to have checked out to make sure everything’s safe and running smoothly.

Might be worth getting your wiring checked for the charger. If there’s a loose lug or any obstruction in the connection, it could heat up and increase resistance, which some EVs can detect and then reduce the charge rate.

Some cars have issues with overheating at the charging port. Which model are you driving?

It’s a GWM ORA 03.

A few EVs have settings to adjust the charge rate on Level 1 charging. Check if your car has a setting that lets you raise the charge rate.

We’re missing some details here. If you’re on 110v charging and it’s -30C, a lot of power goes into keeping the battery warm if there’s a battery warmer. Things like vehicle, charger type, charging environment, and even time of day for charging rates all play a role. Care to share some of that info?

@Howard
It was around 5-6C, and I’m not using battery warming settings, which are only recommended below -15C. Charging overnight without any scheduling set. I’m using a GWM ORA 03 and linked the charger in another comment. I’m used to public charging or using a 7kW charger at work, so just getting used to home charging.

@martin
That’s good to know! Seems like ideal conditions for now, though winter cold can shift things if temps drop below 0C and the battery needs warming before it charges. If you can, check if you have spare capacity in your panel to add 240v for future use close to the garage. And consider a 12V smart charger to keep that battery topped up—many EVs have issues keeping the 12V charged, especially in cold weather. Nice to have the 7kW at work for quicker charging, though!

I have an ORA too; might just be a software glitch. What was your battery’s charge percentage when you started charging?

It was around 30%, but I noticed the same issue another night when it was at 10%.
