Man, electric cars are so fun

Just replaced my 2010 Honda Civic 1.4 with a 2019 Kia Soul EV with 110hp. Only 10 more horsepower but way more lively – it’s got double the torque and much better low-end power.

With the Honda, I’d really have to push it on long climbs. The Soul just pulls up the inclines easily. You do feel the weight in sharp turns, but the suspension handles it surprisingly well.

Great for whipping through roundabouts too!

Still prefer gas cars for the fun factor.

Fair enough, but for similar-level cars (like a Zoé vs. a Clio), the EV is way more fun and quicker. Can’t say the same about a true sporty gas car, though.

@Amelia
Only thing I miss with gas cars is the roaring sound. The Mustang I rented felt like shifting bricks in treacle.

I own three gas cars (two are sports cars), but I keep finding reasons to take the EV out instead.

Totally get it. But for me, a gas car needs at least six cylinders. Four-cylinder turbos just don’t do it for me.

I think what you’re missing is the sound.

But in almost every way, EVs are better:

  • Speed
  • Power
  • Handling (just not enough sporty EVs yet)
  • Comfort
  • Braking

@Robert
Better specs don’t necessarily make it more fun.

Take the Miata – it’s one of the slowest cars I’ve driven but by far the most fun, especially if you’re driving in a way that doesn’t catch the attention of the cops.

@Kenneth
If the Miata was electric, it’d be even better!

Long term, maybe, but not right now. Some of the best things about the Miata are its low weight, compact size, and seating position.

I haven’t seen anything that combines all that with decent range and an affordable price yet. Right now, I think EVs are great daily drivers, but for fun driving, I’m still leaning towards gas cars.
