Thinking about the EV6… Need advice!

Hey EV6 community! I’ve been on the fence about getting an electric car, and the EV6 has really caught my eye. I love the design and that fast charging. I’m especially interested in the 2025 model since the front design is just more appealing to me.

However, I’ve heard some mixed things about battery issues—like sudden drops in range from 200 km to 0 overnight. I also noticed that many used EV6 models I looked at had their batteries replaced, which has me a bit concerned.

So, I’d love to hear from current EV6 owners: What’s your experience been? Is it true that battery issues are that common?

Most people talking about battery replacements are referring to the 12v battery, which had some known issues early on. These were mostly fixed with software updates. I’ve had my GTLS for 3 years—got it in the first batch in the UK. Early software issues got sorted quickly, and while my 12v was replaced in the first month, I’ve had zero problems since then.

I’ve never encountered the sudden range drop you mentioned, and I follow several EV forums closely. Honestly, it’s the best car I’ve ever had, and I’ve owned some nice BMWs and Audis. My lease is up this month, and I’m definitely buying it!

Yes, the 12v battery can be a weak point, but that’s true for many cars. The ICCU is another thing to watch. The recent recall helps with the issue but doesn’t completely fix it.

Aside from those, it’s a fantastic car overall.

Does the ICCU issue affect other models with the same platform? Like the Hyundai and Genesis EVs?

Yes, it affects all models built on the E-GMP platform—EV6, Ioniq5, Ioniq6, and Genesis EVs—up until February 2024.

What changed in February?

Valentine’s Day, maybe? Jokes aside, I got mine in May 2024, so I’m hoping I won’t run into that issue.

It seems that February was when the problem was identified and addressed. The recall applies to models manufactured up to that date.

The recall covers:

  • All 2022-2023 EV6s made between November 17, 2021, and February 7, 2024.
  • Some 2024 models within the same dates.

They changed something in the design hoping this resolves it, but I still think the ICCU’s construction has flaws.

Just to clarify, the 12v battery issue doesn’t impact driving range—though if it dies, you’re not going anywhere! High-voltage battery replacements are incredibly rare, and it’s covered by the long part of the warranty.

Every car uses a 12v battery, and they tend to wear out faster in EVs. The original Kia 12v batteries aren’t great, but I’ve had more issues with 12v batteries in my partner’s ICE Toyota than in my EV6.

If you get a good replacement 12v battery and stay up to date with recalls, you should be fine.

No issues like that for me. I love my EV6. It’s super comfortable, and it’s quick when I need it. I have the Wind AWD with the tech package—definitely worth it! My 12v battery died once, but I replaced it, and it’s been perfect since.

If you replace the stock 12v with a high-quality AGM battery and make sure all recalls are done, you should have a smooth experience.

I got mine in May 2022 and have driven 45k miles with no problems until recently. A few weeks ago, my 12v died, and all the recalls were addressed during that service. Then, I got a warning to check the electrical system, so back to the dealer.

Turns out my main battery needs to be replaced, and a Kia field tech is coming to assist. Covered under warranty, but it’s frustrating. TL;DR: No issues for 2.5 years, then everything hit at once.

Are you able to drive it? Does Kia offer a loaner while you wait?

I can’t use it, and they didn’t offer a loaner. They said I could rent somewhere else and get reimbursed, but I’m just using a family car for now.

Had mine (GT-Line) for 2 months now, and I love it. Came from a high-performance Audi SQ5, and I actually look for excuses to drive this thing!

No issues so far, though it’s only been two months. Have you checked other cars’ reliability? The EV6 seems to have a pretty solid reputation.

I’m a bit concerned about resale value due to multiple 12v battery replacements in my EV6’s service history. It makes me wonder if it’ll hurt my ability to sell it or if I’d feel right selling it knowing about these issues.

Trading it in might feel easier, but dealerships are likely to penalize me on trade-in value if they know the issues. Maybe I’ll push for a buyback from Kia Corporate if the 12v issues persist.

Anyway… yes, I’ve had my share of problems.

Bought a 2023 GT-Line used in March 2024 with 3,000 miles on it for around $41k. It’s my first electric, and I’m loving it—no way I’m going back to ICE. I’ve done 11k miles already. Living in rural Virginia, I don’t get the best range, but it’s still more than enough. And with access to the Tesla network next year, I’m not worried about range.

Looking forward to winter driving. Only downside so far is the extra tax on EVs here in VA, but it’s a small price to pay.

Anyone know if the 12v issue was finally resolved in the 2024 model, or was it pushed to 2025?

I’ve got both the 12v and ICCU issues. Other than that, I love the car. But with my closest dealer four hours away, I don’t think I’d get another.
