What Demographic Buys EVs the most?

Doing some research on EVs for a project and I can’t find much data, especially for electric two-wheelers. I’m trying to focus on the developing world, but a lot of companies don’t make their sales figures public. Does anyone know which demographic (age, sex, location, income, etc.) is buying electric two-wheelers the most? I know it tends to attract budget-conscious and eco-conscious buyers, but I’m looking for more specific information, particularly for developing countries (excluding China), especially India.

Edit: Any stats on India would be super helpful!

Haha, good one. But seriously, OP, it’s hard to ignore the Chinese market when talking about EV buying patterns. It’s massive and well ahead of the curve.

Norway too! By 2024, 95% of their new vehicle sales are NEVs.

Yeah, I know China’s a huge player, but I’m focusing on India. The economic models and wealth distribution there are very different, and comparing China’s EV market to India’s isn’t quite apples to apples.

@Thomas
Got it. China had electric two-wheelers in major cities over a decade ago. If you’re looking for emerging markets, check out countries where Chinese manufacturers are setting up shop: Mexico, Brazil, and many African nations are seeing a surge. South Asia is probably getting flooded too. China is really leading the way in EV production globally.

Here’s a cool read about electric two-wheelers in Africa: A two-wheeled electric transition is taking place in Africa

You didn’t specify a region initially. If you’re just looking broadly, you might want to check out places like Norway, where EVs are practically the default for everyone. But the question is too general. Are you asking about fully electric vehicles, or hybrids too? People buying Rivians and Fords are a different crowd from those buying Teslas or Hyundais.

@Maria
Sorry about that! I updated my post to specify that I’m looking at India, specifically pure electric two-wheelers.

Gotcha. Sorry, I don’t have much for you, but I’ll let you know if I come across any useful stats.

@Maria
Thanks, I really appreciate that!

Honestly, EV enthusiasts come from all walks of life. You’ll find a pretty diverse group of buyers.

If you’re asking about the U.S., I’d say most EV buyers are homeowners with a second vehicle, probably married folks too.

For some reason, Princeton, NJ is crawling with EVs. I’m guessing it’s the combination of education and money.

Most of those are likely cars, though, not the two-wheelers that OP is asking about.

@MAKENA
Oops, missed that detail! My bad.

Seems like every techie Indian-American I know has one.

From what I’ve seen, delivery drivers are a big demographic for electric two-wheelers.

Smart homeowners. They’re the ones who can afford to buy and maintain EVs.

Yeah, smart homeowners and folks who are really into home tech.

In my area (SoCal), high schoolers and teenagers are the main users of two-wheel EVs. It’s a way for them to get around without needing a car or license. Both boys and girls use them, and many are probably bought by parents since the nicer ones can be over $5,000. They also use them for mountain biking and off-roading.
