I’m really sick of hearing this argument. I always respond with:
“But you wouldn’t be able to get gas either.”
“Well, I would have gas!”
“Well, my car would be charged!”
“Oh.”
Do people really think the grid needs to be active for an electric vehicle to drive? Like, do they believe it would suddenly stop working if the power goes out because it doesn’t have any reserve charge? Ugh. Just venting.
It’s always struck me as a strange argument. People don’t realize how fragile the gasoline supply lines are. If there’s civil unrest or a natural disaster, gasoline is gone fast. Power, on the other hand, comes from multiple sources—solar, wind, hydro—spread all over. Even in a crisis, electricity is more resilient than gas.
The battery in my Ioniq 5 holds about the same as 7 Tesla Powerwalls. In a power outage, I can run my fridge, lights, fans, router, and charge my laptop and phone for up to 5 days. When I run low, I can drive to a town with power, charge up, and come back.

Wait, 5 days? Running all that? That’s so cool! (I’m speaking as someone who doesn’t have an EV but now really wants one.)

Stop listening to them. Enjoy your car and your life.

You’re right, but someone came up to me at a hardware store, unsolicited, and started ranting about how bad EVs are for the environment. It was creepy. But later that same day, someone else told me they bought the same model and asked how many miles I get. That was cool.

Didn’t you know EVs need to be plugged into a wall socket while you’re driving around? Everyone knows that. It’s an environmental disaster with all those extension cords flying around!
