Anyone else only able to charge on DC? ICCU replacement question

I know this issue has come up before, but for those who’ve had the ICCU replaced, were you able to charge on AC afterward? Right now, I can only charge using DC. I already had the software update done for the recall, but I haven’t had the ICCU physically replaced. Just wondering if the replacement solved the issue for anyone? Scheduling a Kia appointment soon!

Yep, just went through this. My car stopped charging on AC power, even after the software update, but DC worked fine. Dealership ended up replacing the ICCU and a fuse, and everything’s back to normal now.

For reference: 2022 GTL AWD, 16K miles, all TSBs done, and I replaced the 12V battery about six months ago. Love the car, but this was my first major issue.

@Nathan
Good to know! I’ll be keeping tabs to see if it holds up over time. I’ve got a 2022 Wind with about 15K miles, so sounds similar!

@Nathan
Quick question—how long did the replacement take? I have an appointment at noon today and was hoping to have the car back before the weekend.

Oh boy… well, it can vary. I’d say a couple of days if they have the parts, but be prepared for delays if they don’t know EVs well. My first dealer didn’t diagnose it right and claimed reapplying the software update would solve it. They didn’t even have an L2 charger to test it. When I finally found a dealer who knew what to do, it took 16 days start to finish.

If your dealer has handled ICCU replacements before, you should be in better shape!

@Nathan
Fingers crossed. The dealer I’m working with seemed familiar with the issue, so I’m hoping that’s a good sign. We’ll see!

@Nathan

“L1 and L3 are fine so it’s good to go”

They totally lied! When the ICCU fails, it takes out all AC charging, including L1.

Yeah, that’s basically the point—to get back AC charging. I had mine replaced last week because DC worked but AC didn’t. It took nearly a week just to get through all the tests Kia required before they’d order parts. Finally, it’s charging on L2 again, and even the V2L outlet works now.

@abidemi
Thanks! My dealer says they’ve dealt with ICCU replacements before, so I’m optimistic.

Same problem here. Mine would stop after adding only about 1% charge, then say “Charging Complete.” Replaced the ICCU, and now they’re saying I need a new Inverter Motor.

I wonder if the new ICCU has to be updated again after installation? Maybe that’s causing issues if it wasn’t done right.

Mine hasn’t had the ICCU replaced, only the software update.

@Mark
Ah, then it’s likely the ICCU itself has failed.

Yep, that’s my guess too. Just hoping a replacement will actually fix it long-term. Anyone else have theirs replaced and it’s been fine since?

@Mark
Yeah, the original ICCU design had a flaw with the temperature sensor. The software update was meant to reduce damage until they could replace it. I believe the replacement ICCUs have fixed this, so it should be a permanent fix.

@zendaya
That’s good to hear. It’s always hard to find people who come back to say an issue was resolved permanently, so that’s reassuring!

I’m one of the early adopters, and I’ve had all the updates done right away. Only thing I’ve replaced is the 12V battery with an AGM. Kia does seem to be proactive about fixing known issues, though finding a good dealer can be tough!
