P1AA6 Error - Check Vehicle Electrical System, anyone else seen this?

Hey everyone, I’ve run into an issue twice now when plugging into an AC charger. I get a warning on the dash and an email from Kia Connect, which looks pretty serious. I checked the error code with my ODB2 adapter and the Car Scanner app, and it shows P1AA6, which just seems to be a failed test.

I cleared the error, but it still has me a little worried. I posted about it on the Kia EV forums, but only got one reply so I thought I’d share here.

Here’s the link for more details: https://www.kiaevforums.com/threads/p1aa6-error-only-after-initial-plug-in-to-ac-charger.9058/

Your high-voltage system could be messed up. I’d suggest taking it to the dealership as soon as possible, even without an appointment. Be prepared for them to keep your car for a bit, and definitely push for a courtesy car if needed.

Why do you think the HV system is the issue? I’ve done multiple DC charges since the error and had no problems. I even had a great session with 230 kW for 8 minutes straight!

It seems like the battery is fine to me. The error only happened during the initial plug-in to an AC charger, so I’m thinking it’s more of a glitch.

Have you gotten the ICCU update or any of the other updates yet?

Yeah, I got all the updates, including ICCU and VCU, on August 3rd. The errors started happening over a week later.

I had a similar issue over the weekend. My 2022 EV6 (15k miles) usually charges to 80%, but I set it to 100% overnight and got the error in the morning.

Later that night, I plugged it in again and it started charging, but it stopped silently after adding only 4 kWh. I had enough range for my trip, so I wasn’t stranded, but then later, it stopped again after just 1.45 kWh.

I’ve only done Level 2 charging, except for a couple of road trips where I used DCFC to test my free credits. Right now, my car is charging at 7.4 kW with no issues, but the inconsistency is concerning.

It sounds like your issue is different from mine. My error happens right after I plug into an AC charger, while yours seems to stop charging sometime after it starts.

You should probably take it to the dealer and get a diagnostic done while the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) is still stored. Someone on the Kia EV forum mentioned a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for a similar issue. Check the link in my original post for more info!

I would, but my car was working fine after I cleared the DTC. Plus, it would’ve needed to be towed to the dealer at the point where it wasn’t charging at all.

Oddly enough, I got an email about needing maintenance shortly after the error. You’d think they’d notify me about a serious issue like this instead!

I get that. I also cleared my DTC while on a road trip, and I was sure it was related to the AC charger, not my car.

Most of the time, clearing the error works, but I’d still recommend getting it checked at the dealer if the issue happens again. They can’t do much without a stored error code, though, so wait until it reappears before heading in.

Yeah, I’ve had issues with service follow-up before, like waiting months for a part with no updates. It’s a bit frustrating, but I’ll definitely take it in if the error pops up again.

Update: I contacted Kia Customer Care, and they opened a case based on the Kia Connect messages. But they didn’t seem to know much about the P1AA6 code or TSB ELE290. They said I’d still need to go to the dealer.

Since I cleared the code and haven’t had any issues since, I’ll only take it in if the error comes up again. The dealer can’t do anything if the error isn’t present.

Might be worth getting it checked out, just in case. You wouldn’t want to end up with a big paperweight.

I hear you, but since I cleared the DTC, there’s not much the dealer can do without a stored error. There’s a TSB (ELE290 BMS DTC Judgement Logic Improvement) for this, but it won’t be applied unless the code is still present.

I’m hoping it doesn’t come up again. If it does, I’ll go to the dealer and have them check it out.
