Reimbursing miles when driving an EV for work?

I drive for work and get reimbursed per mile. I definitely come out ahead compared to someone driving a gas car, but I’m not complaining!

I used to not submit for reimbursement because I charge for free at my apartment, but my boss told me I was missing out. Now I claim the mileage, and it’s basically free money. Companies just care about how many miles you drove for work, not how much you’re actually spending.

Car manufacturers price EVs higher, so they take a chunk of the savings from fuel costs. But that doesn’t mean your reimbursement should be different just because it’s an EV.

I get reimbursed for the electricity I use to charge at home at a 1.5x rate, and I expense fast charging with the company card.

Just go with the mileage rate. It’ll make you more money than trying to calculate your charging costs.

Reimbursement is based on miles driven, regardless of whether it’s an EV or gas car. Motorcycles and planes have different mileage rates, though.

The IRS mileage rate applies, just like always.

I just send my boss a screenshot from Google Maps showing the distance and time, and they add the mileage rate to my check. Easy.
