Should I buy a 2023/2024 EV6, or wait for the 2025?

I’m pretty much sold on the Kia EV6 and have been looking to get one for a while now. I recently test-drove the 2023 GT-Line and really liked it. I’ve got a decent amount of cash saved up, not enough to buy one outright, but enough for a 2-3 year lease paid upfront.

Here’s where I’m stuck:

There are a few used EV6s available to me in different trims (Wind, GT-Line) with mileage ranging from 5k-30k. Prices are between $29k-$38k. But then there’s also a local dealership offering $15k off the price of a new 2024 2-year lease, which is super tempting.

The thing is, the 2025 model is looking really interesting to me with the bigger battery, improved charging, and some nice interior updates. So, I’m left with three options:

  1. Buy a used one for $30k-$35k (though I’m less likely to do this now)
  2. Lease a new 2024 for around $40k (this is a toss-up with option #3)
  3. Wait for the 2025 and see how it compares

This will be my first EV, and I already have my garage set up with a Level 2 charger. So, I’ve got some questions for those who already own or are looking at the EV6:

a) Is leasing worth it, or is buying the better option? I’ve got a solid credit score (790+), so financing isn’t a problem.

b) For those who’ve leased an EV6, do you plan on upgrading when a newer model comes out, or are you happy with your current choice?

c) How much do I need to worry about the battery lifespan/health when considering used EVs? I’m trying to wrap my head around how battery health impacts purchase price and resale value, but this is all new territory for me.

d) Warranties – I’ve had good luck with an extended warranty on a used minivan before, but I have no idea if it makes sense for a used EV. Any advice on that?

Sorry for the laundry list, but I’m just trying to make the best decision here.

I’d say lease now and take advantage of the great lease deals. You’ll save money compared to financing. Then after your 2-year lease is up, you can buy a CPO 2025 or 2026 with the better battery and built-in NACS charger.

That’s what I’m planning! I actually ended up leasing an Ioniq 5 instead of the EV6 (even though I preferred the EV6) because the free charging for 2 years and the lease deal I got were too good to pass up. But the plan is still the same.

Do you have home charging? I’ve been using a Level 1 charger at home and the free 3,000 miles from Electrify America, and that’s been enough for me. I only drive 3 miles a day, though.

Not yet, but I’m planning on installing one either before winter or by next spring. My commute is a bit longer… usually 25-40 miles a day.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the design of the 2025 model, so I’d buy now. But that’s just my opinion!

I’m waiting for the 2025 because of the bigger battery upgrade.
