Just saw the news that the Kia EV6 got the 2022 Winter Vehicle Award for Best Electric Vehicle! So pumped to see how it handles the cold this winter. Anyone else excited?
It’s kinda a fluff piece, but yeah, the EV6 should handle winter just fine. I’m not too worried.
Worth noting they only mention the AWD model with the heat pump, which helps reduce range loss in winter.
Alex on Autos did a test comparing the RWD and AWD Wind trims in 70°F and ~35°F temps. From memory, the RWD went from 4.0 to 3.2 mi/kWh in warm vs cold weather, while the AWD dropped from 3.6 to 3.4 mi/kWh. That means the RWD goes from 308 miles to 246 miles on a full charge, and the AWD goes from 277 to 262 miles.
So, RWD loses more range in the cold, but AWD is a bit less efficient in warmer weather. If you only get a few months of winter and don’t drive crazy miles, RWD should work fine for most people.
Already getting chilly here in Buffalo, and no issues with foggy windows! The heat feels instant. I’ve got all the confidence in the world. Plus, I’ve got the Black Pearl, so on those sunny but freezing days, I’ll get a little extra help warming up.
Coming from a Hemi, I’m still impressed—and so are my friends who are now trying to budget for one themselves after riding in mine!
Got my EV6 Wind AWD back in April. One of my first trips was a 136-mile drive from Maine to New Hampshire for a bike race. It was 36°F, and I left with 100% charge. By the time I got there, I had about 62 miles of range left. That was mostly highway driving at 75 mph, so instead of the usual 280 miles on a full charge, I got around 200 miles.
That’s a big drop, but I’m curious to see how it’ll handle my weekly 120-mile trip to our ski condo this winter.

Hope you’ve got a charger at your ski condo!

Only got a 120v trickle charger right now, but that’s probably fine since the car just sits there all weekend.
