Which EV has the most unique sound to you?

Hey, I’m new here!

I know EV sounds are divisive—some people love the silence, while others hate the artificial hums. I used to love a good engine roar, but my E-Tron GT RS has me hooked on its unique sound during acceleration and cruising.

Every now and then, I hear another EV with a distinct sound that catches my attention. For those of you who care about this, which EV has the most unique or interesting sound in your opinion?

I find the Cadillac Lyriq’s sound very calming and unique.

It’s quite lyrical, fittingly.

Does the Blazer EV have the same sound? It annoyed me at first, but I’ve grown to like it in the Equinox.

The GM EV sound design is easily my favorite.

The E-Tron and Porsche Taycan have the best-designed sound by far, and Porsche’s is very similar (same parent company).

The sound has to meet a lot of criteria:

  • Distinct but not distracting
  • Familiar yet different from ICE engines
  • Pleasant for long-term exposure
  • Functional for multiple audiences, keeping pedestrians and drivers informed without being overwhelming

BMW missed the mark by hiring Hans Zimmer, a musician rather than a sound designer. Renault went full crazy with the obnoxious Zoe sound, and Tesla seems to be doing the legal minimum. Most manufacturers don’t seem to care much about sound design beyond meeting basic compliance.

I’ve always liked the E-Tron sound. It feels very fitting for the brand.

The Lucid Air has a really unique gear whine from its planetary reduction gears. It’s not artificial but definitely stands out.

The 2025 models are quieter, and the RWD Pure doesn’t have the same whine. I have a 2023 dual-motor, and while I don’t mind it, I could see how it might bother others.

I hate all the artificial sounds. They’re too loud compared to my old ICE car. I’m glad my 2017 EV has no sound at all.

The pedestrian alert sounds ruin the quiet EV experience for me. My V8 Mustang is stealthier in my neighborhood!

My neighbor once yelled at me to ‘turn off that noise’ while I was backing up. Now I take my time reversing—wouldn’t want to miss anything!

@martin
I hate it too. I can hear the EV neighbors from inside my house, but not the ICE cars. If I upgrade, I’m disabling that speaker.

Tesla’s reverse sound is subtle compared to my dad’s Prius, which you can hear from down the street!

I replaced the speaker with a resistor so the car thinks everything’s fine.

@diallo
I thought about doing that, but it seems risky. If anything happened, my insurance might refuse to cover it.

Hot take, but I kinda like the spaceship noises in parking lots.

Love the way the Ioniq 6 sounds!

The Kia EV6 sounds like a space shuttle docking, and I love it.

I agree! The EV6 has a really unique and cool electric noise.
