Winter storm driving efficiency observations

607 Wh/mile (377 Wh/km). Did a 73 km (45 mile) round trip to town and back during a bad winter storm in my 2022 Tesla Model 3 Long Range.

Conditions:

  • Temperature: -7°C (19°F)
  • Speeds: 60-80 km/h (37-50 mph) due to strong winds (gusts over 50 km/h (31 mph)) and heavy snow
  • Climate control set to 22°C
  • Car equipped with studded winter tires

Interestingly, this is worse efficiency than we get in -40°C weather, where we typically average 310 Wh/km (500 Wh/mile).

If you’re curious why my lifetime efficiency is low (209 Wh/km, 337 Wh/mile), conditions like this are a big reason.

Wind will definitely have that effect.

The massive increase in drag from the snow was a bigger factor today, but the wind definitely added to it.
