I know, I know—it’s very subjective. But if prices were equal, would you pick the R1S over the EV9? I’m torn between the two because the lease deals are almost the same with the current incentives. Thanks, everyone!
Nope.
Test drove both with the family. Everyone preferred the EV9. The ride quality is way better in the EV9—my kids hated the R1S because the ride was too rough. Also, the EV9 is easier to get in and out of, and it feels more spacious, probably because of the 6-seater version with captain’s chairs.
@Thomas
Gotcha. That makes sense. I’m test-driving both this weekend, so I’ll see what’s up, but good to know!
You might also want to ask this on the Rivian sub. But since you’re just leasing for 2-3 years, it shouldn’t matter too much. Go with the EV9, and if you like it, buy it later. Personally, I’d choose the Rivian for the better software and more storage space.
@olivia
Better software is debatable since Rivian doesn’t offer Android Auto yet. That’s a dealbreaker for me.
@olivia
Yeah, I’ll post there today. Thanks for the input!
The only reason I liked the R1S over the EV9 was for off-roading and OTA updates. But for comfort, both driving and sitting, the EV9 wins. It was also cheaper, though that was just a bonus.

Yeah, the price could be a factor.
I own both, and it’s not close—R1S all the way. Better quality, fewer issues, better tech, more storage, and a better app.
I test drove both, liked both, but ultimately went with the R1S. I preferred the style, infotainment, and extra frunk space. The EV9 has perks like normal air vents (instead of screen-controlled ones) and CarPlay, which I really miss on the Rivian. One-pedal driving is better on the Rivian, and it remembers the setting, whereas the EV9 makes you reset the regen every time you start driving.
the lease deals are almost the same
Really? What are you finding for the R1S? When I looked last month, the best I saw was over $800/month. I ended up with a Land for $576/month (12k/24).

@Maria
When comparing lease deals, consider both the monthly payment and the amount due at signing. The R1S lease you posted has a multi-thousand-dollar amount due at signing.
@Maria
I can make any lease cost $100/month—just don’t ask me how much I put down.

True. I was just wondering. Quarter-end deals are usually good, so I’m trying to prepare.
CarPlay and Android Auto are also considerations for a lot of people. If you check the Rivian subs, this topic comes up often.
For us, prices were similar enough that cost wasn’t a big factor.
My wife and I both test-drove the EV9 and R1S. My wife preferred the EV9 in almost every way—driving it, the braking options, CarPlay, the seat arrangement, the mix of physical buttons and screen, and the fact that there are Kia dealers nearby instead of one service center 90 minutes away. For her, it wasn’t even close. I liked the Rivian but couldn’t see myself without wireless CarPlay and Waze, which we use on every drive. Plus, the Rivian’s bait-and-switch tactics were shady, while Kia dealers were more upfront.
The third row in the Rivian is a joke when it comes to legroom. EV9 for us.
We looked at the R1S, and it reminded me of a Toyota 4Runner’s cabin proportions. They sacrificed cabin height for ground clearance, which most buyers don’t need. The EV9 has way more interior volume, making it easier to move around and get in and out of the third row. My 11-year-old was cramped in the R1S. I love Rivian’s innovation, but the platform isn’t practical for most people.
I have an EV9 but not an R1S.
The difference comes down to use case. The R1S is better for off-road stuff while still hauling the family. The EV9 will handle your family just fine but might not handle tough terrain as well. It’s more refined and luxurious, though.
