Anyone else having trouble with wireless CarPlay staying on when the car is off?

I got a dongle to make my CarPlay wireless, but when I turn the car off, the dongle stays powered and keeps connecting to my phone, which is super annoying since my car is parked near my living room. I have to unplug the dongle every time to stop it. Does anyone else have this problem? Any fixes?

The power to my USB ports usually turns off about 5-10 minutes after the car is off. My dongle stays connected for a few minutes, then it disconnects on its own.

If the car is charging or the key is nearby, the USB port stays powered. So if OP keeps the car charging at home, it’ll still try to connect to the phone in the house.

Wait, does the USB port really turn on just because the key is nearby even if the car is off?

Yeah, it’s annoying. If I don’t unplug my wireless CarPlay dongle or turn off Bluetooth on my phone, my phone goes into driving mode constantly. I’ve even missed texts because of this! It’s super frustrating. I’ve been unplugging it, but now that I installed the proximity lock/unlock module, it gets worse. The doors lock every time I try to go unplug it. Thinking about getting a USB cable with a switch. I wish we had built-in wireless CarPlay :worried:.

I don’t think the key is involved. My phone’s audio gets hijacked while I’m in my kitchen, even though the key isn’t near the car.

Yes, it can be related to the key proximity.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll try putting my key in a Faraday box next time without the car charging. It’s just annoying that we can’t turn off the USB power.

It’s only affected by the key being nearby, not whether the car is charging.

That doesn’t match what I’ve experienced.

Try testing it like I did by using a USB-powered light. The USB stays powered if the key is close or if the car is charging.

My key is on the other side of the house, but my phone still tries to connect when the car is charging. I think it might depend on the dongle being used.

It’s not either/or. If the car is charging, the USB stays powered. If the key is nearby, the USB also stays powered. So you’re both right.

Same here, it keeps doing this until I give up and unplug it.

My USB-A port seems to stay powered all the time. My dashcam records constantly, and I’ve had a couple of low-voltage errors in the last two weeks.

I had a similar issue (not in a Kia) and bought a simple switch from Amazon so I can turn off the USB without unplugging it every time. Works perfectly!

Same! I use one in my EV6, and it’s been a lifesaver. Just flip the switch when I need to charge.

Here’s a fix: The USB-C port next to the USB-A port only powers on when the car is in accessory mode or turned on. So if you’re charging or just opened the car, the USB-C stays off.

Here’s what I did:

  1. Use a USB-A to USB-C adapter to connect your dongle to the USB-C port.
  2. Use the data/charge side of the cable for the USB-A port.

You’ll also need a power block to stop the USB-A port from always supplying power.

I did something similar but used a 12V adapter for the cigarette lighter instead of the USB-C port. It works perfectly, plus my adapter shows the voltage too!

That’s exactly what I did, and it’s worked flawlessly. The wires are a bit messy, but I don’t even notice them anymore.
